SITE OVERVIEW

On this site you can learn a little more about the country and what it’s like to visit.

Many foreign visitors don’t make it past the capital Prishtina, which is packed with international workers and organisations giving it an energetic and slightly edgy air.

To the West and South of the country the medieval towns of Peja and Prizren represent the best hopes for the tourism industry - but it’s also well worth visiting the bazaar and tekkes of Gjakova, the dramatic Rugova Valley, and the remote Gorani village of Brod. The cultural highlights are the Pec Patriarchate, the monastery of Decani, and the restored fortified buildings of villages such as Isniq.

For those interested in the legacy of the conflict and the Kosovan Liberation Army the Jashari memorial at Prekaz is unmissable.

The village of Plemetina gives a glimpse of what life is like today for the country’s Roma and Serb minorities - and the eerie semi-abandoned village of Janjevo provides a cautionary tale as to what happens when an entire community flees the country.

I’ve also written about one of the many smaller charities working in the country - Manchester Aid to Kosovo - and their efforts to build an English style park and gardens in the declining industrial town of Podujeva, a ten year project which has provided inspiration for the town’s young people.
